A Faity-Tale Return For Ballet In London

After a long and dark period of lockdowns and closures, the English National Ballet has made a triumphant comeback with a dazzling production of Cinderella at the Royal Albert Hall. The show, which runs from June 23 to July 2, 2023, is a celebration of the resilience and creativity of the ballet world, as well as a testament to the enduring appeal of fairy tales.

Cinderella is one of the most popular and beloved ballets, with its timeless story of love, magic, and transformation. The English National Ballet’s versions, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, is set in a mid-20th century London that has been ravaged by war. Cinderella’s father is killed in an air raid, leaving her at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. Her only escape is through her imagination and her friendship with a mysterious old man turns out to be her fairy godfather.

The production is a spectacle of sight and sound, with over 90 dancers, a live orchestra, magnificent sets, and transformational projections. An audience of about 4,000 surrounds the large circular performance space, giving the production an immersive feel. The costumes are stunning, ranging from drab wartime outfits to glamorous ball gowns. The choreography is inventive and expressive, blending classical ballet with contemporary dance and theatrical elements.

One of the highlights of the show is the performance of Precious Adams, a 28-year-old U.S.-born soloist who is making her debut in the title role. Adams brings grace, strength, and emotion to her portrayal of Cinderella, capturing her journey from despair to joy. She is well-matched by Daniel McCormick, who plays her prince charming with charm and charisma.

The show is not only a delight for the eyes and years but also for the heart and soul. It is a reminder of the power of art to uplift and inspire us, especially in times of hardship and uncertainty. It is also a tribute to the talent and dedication of the ballet dancers and staff who have overcome many challenges to bring this fairy tale to life.

Cinderella is a fairy-tale return for ballet in London, and a treat for anyone who loved beauty, romance and magic.
