Academy Award-Winning Actress Lupita Nyong'o to Head Jury at Berlin Film Festival





The esteemed Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o, renowned for her powerful performances in acclaimed films such as "Black Panther" and "12 Years A Slave," has been named the head of the jury for the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, as announced by festival organizers on Monday.


Nyong'o, a Mexican-Kenyan actress, gained international acclaim for her Oscar-winning portrayal of the brutalized slave Patsy in Steve McQueen's historical drama "12 Years A Slave." Throughout her career, she has consistently chosen roles that explore the African diaspora and address themes of race. Her noteworthy performances also include the role of Nakia in Marvel Studios' groundbreaking film "Black Panther" (2018) and its 2022 sequel. Additionally, she starred in Jordan Peele's 2019 psychological horror film "Us."


Beyond her accomplishments on the big screen, Nyong'o has made significant contributions to stage and television. Currently, she is involved in the development of a series based on the work of Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, titled "Americanah."


The Berlinale, as the Berlin Film Festival is commonly known, holds a prestigious position in the international film circuit. The jury, led by Lupita Nyong'o for the upcoming edition, will be responsible for selecting the recipients of the Golden and Silver Bears, coveted awards that stand alongside those at Cannes and Venice as some of the most prestigious in the film industry.

In a joint statement, Berlinale directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian expressed their enthusiasm for Nyong'o's appointment, stating, "Lupita Nyong'o embodies what we like in cinema: versatility in embracing different projects, addressing different audiences, and consistency to one idea." The directors highlighted Nyong'o's ability to bring depth and diversity to her roles, making her an ideal leader for the esteemed jury.
